A Certain Canine's View on Book Signings

Posted by donnadawson at 12:01 AM on October 13, 2009

Duke has just made it quite clear that he is NOT fond of book signings.  I have received this bit of information with a well-concealed smirk.  Afterall, Duke has not yet been to a book signing so I'm not sure how he can make such a judgment.  It seems that he has a phobia of people who wish to pat him on the head, scritch his chin and proclaim him as 'cute'.  I don't think the patting and scritching are so much the problem.  It's more the declaration of his cuteness that has him in a kerfluffle.  Duke has a bit of a high opinion of himself.  He seems to think that he is a regal mutt of much larger proportions that what is reality.  The pronouncement of the word 'cute' in relationship to his very masculine name makes him cringe in shame.  I have told him that people mean well and what would he rather have them do?  Call him ugly?  Duke has just given my cold logic the cold shoulder.

I rather enjoy book signings.  I have met the most interesting people and have suggested that Duke might also enjoy the experience if he can get past his own pride.  And besides, book signings are a very real part of the publishing process.  People want to meet the author.  They want to feel as though they have connected back with the person who connected with them through writing.  It's a fun exchange.  Often, we talk about the characters and plot of the story as though it is real.  And it usually is.  Many times, readers have experienced something similar in their own lives or can identify with a character.  Duke just doesn't understand that sometimes we have to look past ourselves to see the importance of making this connection with others.  It certainly isn't about the status of authorhood (yes, Duke, it IS a word.  I just made it up.) and I get great pleasure out of letting the readers see that I am just like them.  It isn't about reassuring myself of my writing abilities. (No Duke, you don't need to comment on the need for your editing skills on that last manuscript).

Book signings are so important because we touch base with our reasons for writing in the first place.  Each time someone's life is changed--each time their hearts are touched and turned closer to the Saviour--each time God shines through us to light a darkened path--we are reminded of why we keep pecking away at that keyboard.

As far as I'm concerned, Duke is missing out on a very great privilege and blessing.  Our friend Duke has a way with words, yes, but he misses the chance to see his words alter individual histories.  So go ahead Dukey.  Turn your back.  Point your nose ceilingward.  It doesn't bother me.  I will take your place and, along with those readers who have taken the time to come to a signing, I will laugh and cry and celebrate the beauty of knowing God's heart through the written word.

Aah, methinks Duke's problem might be that he doesn't have his OWN book to to take to a signing -- e-e-rr, not that I am judging him ... of course.
Putting up with a head-patting, chin scritching or scratching, patronising public is harder to bear when you're simply viewed ike a mascott for other people's books and signings.
Such annoyances may be more easily endured when one's own authorhood is being displayed to the public.

Duke sounds like he can be very oppinionated at times. But is it pride or fear that would make him think booksignings aren't necessary? Maybe he isn't comfortable with himself as he is. If he was it wouldn't matter whether people called him cute or ugly. or anything in between. Once He gets a couple of book signings under his belt he'll change his tune.

Thanks for the lesson,Donna

The writer of www.authordonnadawson.com has written a superior article. I got your point and there is nothing to argue about. It is like the following universal truth that you can not disagree with: Axiom 2: Improvement is good. I will be back.
